Southeast Asia staggered on the first day of February after Myanmar’s leader Aung San Suu Kyi was arrested along with other key officials of her governing party in a morning military raid calling the November 2020 elections “fraudulent. The internet links and communication networks were shut down and interrupted while the state broadcaster MRTV said it had technical difficulties and was out of the air. Now, all eyes are on Myanmar’s powerful military leader, General Min Aung Hlaing, as he seizes power. After the arrest of civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other senior members of her ruling party, the…
AbstractInternational trade has increased leaps and bounds with globalisation and so did sea-borne trade. Sea-borne trade depends upon free movement near the choke points and the Straits that is considered as global commons. Coastal borders, gulfs, territorial waters, cargo terminals, waterways, air and sea transportation, ports and container securityentered the paradigm of security; especially maritime security. These are also the regions where illegal movement of arms, narcotics and humans happen; with piracy, crime and terrorism infesting the region like in no other times. Movement of people and resources led to focussing on not only maritime issues but also to know…
As global attention stands riveted on the fearsome military showdown over Ukraine in Eastern Europe, it reaffirms the tragedy of oversight of the mindless wars wreaking havoc in other parts of the world. The international community has been treacherously silent on the Reigns of Terror that governments as in Yemen and Syria have for years been waging against their own populace. Often these brutalities are committed in the guise of stemming civil uprisings, or simply cultural subjugation as regards the Tibetansand Uyghurs in China, and the harsh repression of North Koreans by despot Kim Jong-un.The outcome, however, is invariably genocide,…
Renewing Friendships in a New World Order: India and GreeceBy Debdoot Basu RayOn March 24th, Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias visited India. This was when a slew of nations visited India, with the Russo-Ukrainian conflict growing every day. Indian media were slow to bring out the news considering the number of high-profile visits from the US, UK, Germany, Russia, Nepal etc. However, one cannot blame the Russo-Ukrainian conflict for this, as India and Greece often find themselves on the second pages of the Indian tabloids. Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the Greek PM, and Modi have visited each other at least twice, and Dr…
With the ongoing Chinese aggression in Ladakh, why China’s ambassador chose to engage publicly with some Indian interlocutors in an event organized by a Delhi-based institute is not easy to fathom.Such an initiative would make sense if official level negotiations were on a productive track and Beijing felt that the ambassador could do a public relations exercise to keep the broader Indian public informed and arrest the momentum of rapidly deteriorating perceptions of China in India. If, however, these negotiations are not proceeding well and the risk of a stalemate is real, such a public intervention cannot serve China’s interests.India…
The WHO draft resolution sponsored by 61 nations, including India, is an eye-wash, as it lets China off the hook completely. There is no call in it for any independent investigation into Covid-19 origins. China or Wuhan is not mentioned directly or indirectly in the text. The words “transparency” and accountability” are missing too. That would explain Russia’s support. India had no reason to opt-out of an anodyne draft. With China now supporting it, there is no reason for Beijing to be upset by India’s position. The word “as appropriate” is mentioned in critical parts of the draft, which provides a…
To accuse India of Islamophobia is truly perverse. Given the wounds inflicted by centuries of Muslim rule, India as a majority Hindu country could have been deeply intolerant towards Islam. Instead, it has embraced Islam as an integral part of India.Attempts at peaceIslamic fundamentalism ravaged India in 1947, long before the world discovered the pernicious nature of this ideology centered on a clash of civilizations, refusal to accept modernity and diversity, the violent assertion of religious identity, religious intolerance, terrorism, unspeakable brutalities, territorial ambitions, and so on. The belief that Muslims formed a separate nation created Pakistan. Up to 2…
Our resistance to external interference in our internal affairs has greatly eroded at the national level. This gives unfriendly external forces more room to play on our internal differences, promote lobbies to weaken us from within, make governance more difficult, with consequences for the pace of India’s rise and its global ambitions. The UN Secretary-General has been violating the Charter’s core principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of member states by pronouncing on our legislative decisions, internal security steps and community tensions when India functions much more democratically than the UN.Out to offend IndiaThe UN High Commissioner of Human…
By Shloka Dikshit Introduction :Bioterrorism is a planned and organized use of pathogenic strains of microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses or their toxins to spread life-threatening pathogens on a massive scale to devastate the population of the area. People have described the next hundred years as the ‘century of biology.’ Incredibly rapid and dramatic changes in genetic modifications in biomolecular engineering and strengthened bio-production technologies may, however, make it easier for terrorists to overcome the barriers that have hindered the procurement of bio agents in the past. The danger of biological warfare has attracted the attention of Indian defense and medical experts for…
INTRODUCTION China has been known by many names throughout history, but the most traditional name China used to refer to itself is – ‘Zhonggou’ meaning the Middle Kingdom or the Central Kingdom. The name implies the belief that, from a cultural and historical point of view, China is the ‘centre’ of the world. China was divided into several independent states thousands of years ago but united by an emperor. As China became more united, the middle kingdom referred to the actual middleness of these states. With time the term is used for the entire country as a whole rather than a small…
